Creative is the targeting now

Ten years ago a skilled media buyer earned their fee through targeting: interest stacks, layered audiences, manual bid adjustments, dayparting. Most of that work has been absorbed by the platforms. What is left, and what now decides your results, is the asset.

The algorithm already knows

Broad targeting with a strong creative consistently beats narrow targeting with a mediocre one. We have tested this across every account we run and the pattern is uncomfortably consistent. The platform's model has more signal about who converts than any audience you can assemble manually.

What the platform cannot do is decide what to say. Creative is the only remaining lever where human judgement produces a durable advantage, and it is the lever most accounts underinvest in, because creative is expensive and bid adjustments are free.

What we actually see in the data

Across eighteen months of paid social creative, the variance in cost per acquisition between the best and worst asset in the same campaign, same audience, same landing page, averaged 4.1x. The variance between the best and worst audience configuration for the same creative averaged 1.3x.

Creative fatigue is faster than most teams plan for. In our accounts, a strong performer typically degrades meaningfully between day nine and day sixteen. If your production pipeline delivers new assets monthly, you spend half of every month running tired creative.

Hook rate, the proportion of viewers still watching at three seconds, predicts final cost per acquisition better than any other early metric we track. It is available within hours of launch, which makes it the most actionable signal in the account.

What to change

Move budget from management to production. If you are spending more on managing the account than on making things to put in it, the ratio is wrong.

Test hypotheses, not variations. "Does leading with the price objection beat leading with the outcome?" is a test. Four colour variants of the same ad is noise.

Shoot for the format. Vertical hooks should be written as vertical hooks, not cropped from a landscape hero film in the edit. The difference is visible in the first three seconds and it is visible in the cost per acquisition.

And build a pipeline, not a project. A quarterly shoot day producing a month of assets beats an annual production with a six-figure budget and nothing to follow it.

The takeaway

The agencies still competing on targeting sophistication are competing for the 1.3x. The ones competing on creative volume and quality are competing for the 4.1x. Choose accordingly.
